Blogging
jan.28.2010After attending a recent workshop about the key elements to improving a sites search ability, I have come to the conclusion, that regardless of the type of site you have, you must do three things to keep it in the first few pages of a search result.
1. Keep content changing. That is where blogs come in. Now I don't have a blog here, but I do change out the content, it is the same thing. I am missing out on receiving feedback from visitors to the site and their links to other relevant content, but I am using targeted key phases to help my ranking on a search result.
2. Linking. Linking is a good thing, but it can be overdone, not to mention if your site is linked to a site that isn't relevant, kept fresh and well visited then you are hurting yourself. There are two types of linking - internally and externally (some call it out bounding) Internally is where I might refer you to my webclass page for more about SEO. Externally is where you might have a partner linked on your site, for instance, I have IDXbroker.com on mine. The other type of external is where you are on another site, and refer to either your own site or a different one all together.
3. Networking via blogs, tweets, facebook, ie, social media. Not so much that you have a link to all of these on your site, but you visit and interact via social media in a true meaningful way. In doing so you build up validation for your own knowledge, and expertise, and eventually you are able to link that site to yours or to post your link referring back to your site for a specific reason. In all cases of social media BE REAL.
Some tips on how to approach your webmaster:
> Ask nicely, we tend to be sensitive and territorial with our work.
> Remember webmasters talk in one language, you in another, therefore, be sure you both are on the same page talking the same language.
> Ask for what you would really would like to have, but remember it may not be possible or it wasn't in the proposed budget. Be ready to compromise, or pay extra.
> Never assume your idea or want is unrealistic, again, coding is a factor, and the time to make the changes. Some are a simple click, others are re-inventing the site.
> Try to stick with the original mock up of the site. Once you approve it, that's when we can begin building the site, Changing the feel or look mid stream can be done, but expect to pay
> Present changes in an email, or a word doc. Especially with content change. Webmasters do not hold a PHD in English.
> If you have content or images for a certain page, send them well identified for what page and even where on the page.
Building websites is a great pleasure for me. It's like creating a garden, both start with either a blank area or one of some of this and some of that. From there, based on what the clients wants, and what is possible, I create some very neat sites (or gardens). But during the entire process, I am seeking my clients' input and looking, listening for their reactions. So help me, speak up after all, it is your site.
Moving Forward
This year businesses should be looking to each other to take control of their economic situations. Partnerships are invaluable, they are in essence a networking and marketing tool. Some partners will offer cash back for referrals, other a link on their site, and all of them, a positive word about the companies they support. That is what the Clients website Company is all about.
Over the next several days, I will be tweaking the site with new clients, even updating repeating clients on the home page, and in the portfolio section. By updating the site, I want to share my clients with all those who visit. This company doesn't just design, develop, and improve SEO for new and existing websites, but supports the product or services of the businesses. We feel by trusting us to give them a site that will meet their expectations, they are trusting us as individual, We reciprocate the same trust.
When you have a website worked on, don't settle for less, granted some changes are not possible, but alternatives are. Talk to your webmaster, keep an open mind, and look for a working solution. The key is a win- win outcome.
